A blast from the past is hitting consoles very, very soon in the form of Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection. This guide will get you up to speed on what it is, when it’s out, what it costs, and just about everything you need to know.
Aspyr Media, the go-to port house for retro Star Wars games these days, is releasing Star Wars Classic Collection this month on modern consoles. The games were originally released some 20 years ago, so the nostalgia factor is high with this one.
Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection Release Date and Time
The Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection will be released on March 14th, 2024, with the game going live at midnight across the world.
The double pack will be available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
What is the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection?
If you’re old enough to have been around and online during the days of the original Xbox and Xbox Live, you’ll already know what the deal here is. For those of you who only know the Battlefront name from EA’s most recent games… Kid, you’re in for a treat.
The Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection is a double pack that includes Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Battlefront 2. Now, these games have been available to Xbox players for a while now thanks to the backward compatibility program, but there was one key component missing: Online multiplayer.
The Classic Collection ships with online multiplayer support for up to 64 players for large-scale battles. It’s gonna be hectic stuff.
What’s New in the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection?
This isn’t just a simple up-rez and release job by Aspyr Media, though for the most part, the games will look as they did when they originally released, albeit with higher resolutions and some touch-ups to the visuals.
The biggest additions to the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection is in the content that’s included.
Star Wars Battlefront includes just one extra Bonus Map in the form of Jabba’s Palace. However, Star Wars Battlefront 2 includes four Bonus Maps: Bespin: Cloud City, Rhen Var: Harbor, Rhen Var: Citadel, and Yavin 4: Arena.
You’ll also get access to two Bonus Heroes in the form of Asajj Ventress and Kit Fisto.
Another new addition is that the Hero Assault game mode, where the game pits Heroes vs Villains, is now playable on all non-space maps. So even if you spent dozens of hours as a kid playing Hero Assault, this will still manage to feel fresh.
What Is The Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection File Size?
Back in the day, these games were fairly small in size given that they had to fit on a DVD. But, we’re in 2024 now, and everything is bigger and, for the most part, better. So, don’t expect a tiny Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection download.
If you’re going to be battling it out on Nintendo Switch, we know that the download will be 25.4GB on Nintendo’s hybrid system. This info comes directly from the Nintendo eShop, so it’s about as reliable as can be.
On Xbox Series X|S and Xbox, the download is around 56GB, which is not exactly light, and it does make us wonder if there’s more going on under the hood of the game than has been revealed, especially as the game received a hefty 35GB update just a couple of days ago before it is even released. Pre-loading for the Xbox edition is available now if you’ve pre-ordered.
The PS5 and PS4 file sizes are not yet known, though you can expect the download to be similar in size to what’s on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
